Oral Cancer

The main risk factors in oral cancer are drinking alcohol and smoking or chewing tobacco. However, there is growing evidence that an increasing proportion of oral and oropharyngeal cancers are caused by the HPV (human papilloma virus). The development can be subtle, painless, and can be hard to detect because the symptoms and signs are not always obvious to the individual, or examining dentist/doctor. You should seek an opinion/examination from a Dentist/Doctor to evaluate any symptoms that you are concerned about, and certainly anything that persists for two or more weeks.

We will check your mouth at each examination visit for signs of disease, however if you have any concerns at any time please contact the surgery to arrange a consultation.

If your dentist discovers something suspicious in an area of your mouth, face, neck, or jaw that may have an underlying problem, you will be referred to the Maxillofacial unit at your local hospital for further investigation.

Please speak to reception for details if you would like to book a consultation or explore the services we provide.
